What would you say to a person who's learning Mandarin?

Basic perhaps or foundations I can use to build my knowledge about the language.

Ex. When I was learning Korean (still not fluent but can now understand basic words and can read Hangul)

I started with the Romanization of each character then slowly practice being independent to Hangul itself.

Then continued with basic phrases and words used commonly.

Since Mandarin I believe is very difficult, to re-iterate, what are the things you would want me to consider first in learning aside from learning that Chinese Language has many "dialects" or "languages within itself" that uses the same characters but not the words you actually say as well as it is also kind of similar to Japanese since it influenced it?
