Meaning and usage of 念?

My textbook says that it means ‘to study’ but I looked it up online and some definitions say it’s ‘to read aloud’. What is it’s meaning? Is this just a more formal version of 學?

Here is the sentence where it was used: 我先在語言中心念一年，再念四年大學，所需要五年。
