I have the strangest problem, admittedly I am still very new to Chinese only at HSK2, so that might be a part of the problem. But still I would like to know if anyone else has had this problem.
I have found that so far, I can really only communicate with other non-native speakers of Chinese when it comes to both comprehension and speaking. It also seems to cut both ways, that is, when I speak to non-natives they can clearly understand what I am saying and I understand what they are saying well. But as soon as I speak with non-natives neither they nor I understand anything of what they other is saying!
I know it sounds completely counter-intuitive that people that are less proficient would understand me better and vice versa but I don't believe this to be a coincidence. I attend a weekly Chinese language learner meetup so I have had ample opportunities to speak to other non-natives as well as natives and I am consistently encountering this language barrier.
Has anyone else experienced this? Does it get better over time?
