Happy 520! Could someone tell me what the holiday actually is, though?

A friend of mine recently texted me Happy 520, and explained that because the date said aloud in Chinese kind of sounds like '我爱你', it's a special holiday in China. Is it kind of like China's Valentine's day, or is it something different? Thanks in advance for any explanations!
