What is the most internationally used Chinese language/as a foreigner (Australian) what would be the most useable Chinese language?

Total noob here. I’ve been interested in Chinese language for years but it’s very complex and their seems to be many of them.

I thought mandarin was most common (internationally) however a reply to a comment on here said Chinese and mandarin might be different?

I’m considering learning a Chinese language but I’m wanting to learn what would be most appropriate for me as a foreigner/Australian.

Thanks for any help!
