Verb + 上 + object:吃不上饺子;说上几句话

Self Intro

I’m from China and I teach Chinese online.

Verb + 上 + object

Consider the two uses of verb + 上:

(1) to get (the chance) to do something (See grammar 4.19.2 verb + 上)

看来今天吃不羊肉饺子了。

It looks like we won’t get to eat mutton dumplings today.

(2) verb suffix, meaning “to do something for a little bit”

接着他开始沿着队列向前走去,时而说上几句话

Then he began to walk along the lines, saying here and there.

我常常跟着电视学唱京剧,然后一遍一遍地练习,偶尔跟中国人一起唱上几句。(Standard Course HSK 4下 Lesson 13 Dialog 2)

I sometimes sing a few lines with Chinese people.
