In the preposition chapter of Modern Mandarin Chinese Grammar I came across this sentence:
他对你说了什么话
And I wondered if this could be restated without using any prepositional phrase. For example, maybe 他说话了你什么?Oh wait, but indirect objects are supposed to be before the direct object, so maybe 他说你话了什么?Something about this doesn't feel right.
Now I'm wondering if the rule is that I need to use a preposition for verbs that do not take an indirect object. Is this correct?
In general, how do I know if a verb does not take an indirect object? Is there a name for these kinds of verbs?
