Have you tried using your local library to read Chinese books?

The number of Chinese books at some of the libraries according to their catalogues:

Library Number of Books in Chinese
Boston Public Library 15,000
Vancouver Public Library 20,000
Toronto Public Library 23,000
New York Public Library 100,000

Many of the libraries also offer free access to qikan.com, which gives you access to a huge collection of scanned magazines from China.
