Do you speak Chinese with Chinese people outside China?

I'm German, living in Germany, and I've been learning Chinese for some time now. I really enjoy it and I would like to have more opportunities to speak Chinese, but I'm just to shy. I go to Chinese restaurants and instead of ordering in Chinese, I speak German, because I'm too self-conscious. And, well, that's the language we both understand. I've mostly focussed on reading Chinese, so I'm not that good at speaking it. Does anyone else know this feeling? What's your experience with speaking Chinese to native speakers outside China?
