I work at the front desk of a hotel in Southern California. We usually have businessmen and families come through here who can speak English decently. Whenever I speak Chinese to them they'll stick to English, even if I hold speaking Chinese.
But the older people come through here are pretty much free Chinese lessons. They don't revert, they are not hesitant to speak, have more time to speak, and a general joy to converse with. Usually they'll correct a couple words, and I'll look it up after the conversation.
I'd say ages 50-75, anything after that it gets really hard to understand them as they have a heavy accent, or are speaking there native dialect.
Anyways try it out !
