I feel like I am ineffectively learning Chinese, please help?

I am able to speak conversational Chinese, however I want to expand my vocabulary.

This has led me to build an extensive list of random words in a note book, which seems very disorganised despite how much I organise it (i.e. furniture, conversational words, measurements). Even then I just have a growing list of words that vaguely is categorised correctly, which makes it difficult for me to follow a consistent learning path.

How do you learn it?
