How do you remember tones?

I really struggle to remember which tone a word is. If I am reading pinyin from a text, I do fine, but if I have to say something from memory, I can remember the sounds, but not the tones. I am still a long way from reading (or writing) characters.

What techniques do you use to help remember which tones go with which words/meanings?
