Currently studying abroad in China and my oral Chinese is such a low level that it’s limiting my academic and social progress. Just looking for some advice.
I can deal with day to day interactions in shops/restaurants etc and read out text but I don’t have any Chinese speaking friends to practice my language with so I’m awful at having conversations in any depth and my listening kinda sucks. I’ve tried to reach out to my classmates but we really don’t click at all and I live on a different campus to both them and the actual Chinese students. The campus I live on is postgrad students so they’re too busy to hang out.
Basically, all the friends I have out here don’t speak any Chinese and I’ve found it really difficult to meet any Chinese speakers who actually want to be friends. I’m in groups for language meet ups and sometimes people will approach us in bars to practice their English but the interaction tends to be very short-lived, even if we exchange WeChat contacts. I’m in such a good position to learn the language and I feel like I’m wasting my days sat on my own and I’m stuck at this annoying level where I can’t articulate myself properly. My study was definitely lacking so I’m looking to get into a better pattern with that but I’ve always found it hard to study speaking and listening anyway.
Sorry if this is in the wrong sub but I figured this would be the best place for it and the rules seemed to suggest it would be okay. Any advice would be lovely.
