To begin, an analog from the West: Sir Patrick Stewart, Sir Ian McKellen, Vanessa Redgrave, these are Shakespearean actors and you can tell from their performances that they have this particular background.
After a couple months of watching quite a few Chinese dramas, I've noticed that there are a few older actors who tend to exhibit certain similar peculiarities, with such a je ne sais quoi to it; it feels almost whimsical but precise, lyrical and physical. For instance, in 将夜, the actor 金士傑, and in 射雕英雄傳, 宁文彤. Often when I watch the one I am reminded of the other, certain idiosyncrasies in their style.
This has me wondering if there are Chinese acting styles akin to the Shakespearean in Britain, but alas a brief search yielded no results in English and I wouldn't know how to search for it in Chinese yet - but to read it, perhaps that would be more doable.
Thus it is with the utmost curiosity that I ask of you for a point in the direction wherein the answer to my question may be found. A single character or a centuries' old name, anything to get the ball rolling, would be appreciated.
Addendum: While I know that most would argue that, conversely, the younger actors have no acting style whatsoever, as I watch 老九门, I find myself quite fond of the style of 应昊茗.
