The word tǔ is used as mandarin slang for unfashionable or outdated. Tǔ in its same meaning is one of the 5 classical elements Earth representing transformation of matter towards balance. Considering the Wu Xing is older than 1000 BCE, should it be noted tǔ probably had a more positive meaning than how it is used now?
I guess my point is dirt or soil was never suppose to be considered a word used to describe something as “dirty” or “unfashionable”. Dirt represented transformation of matter towards balance.
