r/chineselanguage and politics

As we all know, China has been in the news a lot lately. Reddit, being what it is, has reacted to events in China, as well as the news that the Chinese internet company Tencent has invested in Reddit, in a number of ways. Not all of them have been constructive.

The mod team wants to thank you for not bringing politics, name calling or nationalism into r/ChineseLanguage

Obviously the issues of culture, politics and language are intertwined. That may give rise to discussions about whether to learn simplified or traditional characters, which is better, what is taught in schools and why and so on. As long as discussion can remain civil there's no need for the moderation team to be involved.

That being said, overt political threads, baiting and name calling, i.e. r/CCJ2 style language, is not welcome here. Language learning is a way to expand your world, to find opportunities to make friends and allies outside your own familiar surroundings as well as create cross cultural understanding. If you want to discuss China relations, news, life in China, or other topics not related to learning Chinese, please feel free to visit r/China or r/chinalife or one of the location specific subreddits like r/shanghai r/Chengdu etc.

Thank you for being part of this subreddit!
