Can somebody help me understand why 打电话给... is valid? Specifically, why 给 is put after the verb phrase. I know some verbs mess with the order of prepositions/coverbs with things like 放...在 or 住在 or 生出在 putting 在 after the verb, and so on, but those make sense because the verbs take locative complements as their "objects". What is it that makes it acceptable to put 给 after 打电话 here, and is this a generalizable rule?
