Not recognising some characters without context(other characters)

I am struggling with recognizing a character if the word I learned in it is not present in the text. For example I recently learned 冒险, but yesterday I just couldn't remember when I saw 险 alone, when I saw the character it didn't ring any bells. No meaning, no pinyin/tone.

I use Skritter, an SRS, to study characters. I usually add the amount of words so that I learn 15-20 new characters per day. According to the site I'm somewhere around 800 characters.

Whenever I add a word there, should I add the individual character as well?

If I did that, it would increase my workload a lot in the long run. I'm not sure about the usefulness either since the individual meaning and meaning in context can be very different for many characters. Do you think it is worth it?

I have also thought about adding another 2 character word with one recently learned character with one known so I get double practice on the new character while learning another full word. What should I do?

Would appreciate any advice, thanks!
