Logistically speaking, how did standard chinese spread through china via the educational system?

I’ve tried finding articles about this subject, to no avail. I understand that standard chinese (putonghua) was spread primarily via the educational system, but I don’t know much more than that. This raises some questions, such as: * how the teachers themselves learned mandarin, or were teachers brought in from other parts of china? * How did they reach even the smallest towns and cities. We’re they done in waves, reaching certain types of schools in certain types of cities first (e.g. if teachers were brought from mandarin speaking regions, then moving them around) * How were classrooms and school environments kept in mandarin effectively enough, both inside and out in the hallways, for students to learn to speak fluently. I’m Canadian and it’s pretty apparent how even French immersion can leave a person speaking poor French despite an “immersive” environment * Any info on resistance, such as regions that resisted more, and how they did?

I find it fascinating how quickly and effectively the spread of the language through the country took place and would love to learn more about the specifics!
