I made the mistake of studying Chinese without characters

I’ve been learning Chinese without characters since September. Now, I don’t know how I should start characters. I have a comfortable knowledge of about 400 - 500 words. Is it too late to start? What are your strategies? How much time do you spend per day on characters?
