How do you discern between different meanings of homophones?

For example, you have the sound "huáng". According to wiktionary, there is 42 hieroglyphs represented by this sound. Imagine that someone says to you that something is "huáng", and there are no context clues that would hint whether they mean, say, “yellow” or “magnificent”. Something like “There are a lot of [yellow/magnificent] houses in Thailand”. How do you know which of these they mean? I know the standard answer is “we judge based on context”, but is it really always possible? Either in the example above or in general?
