The Chinese name for Taiwan's oldest/biggest online bookstore site http://books.com.tw/ is 博客來, whose website launched in 1996 (so, pretty early in the history of the web). I've been itching to understand the origin of that name better; I didn't find anything obvious on the site itself. I'm guessing there's some wordplay or something going on; I know 博客 can mean "blog" (though there's nothing particularly "blog"-like about the site - also I don't believe the terms "blog" or "weblog" were actually in use yet in 1996 (Wikipedia says the term was coined in 1997, but I think it wasn't common until probably more like 99?)). If I read the name character by character, it makes me think something like "knowledgeable customers come [to us]", and maybe there's some wordplay with the English word "book"?
Does anyone have further insight or guesses at what's behind this name?
