After taking a 5 year break from learning Chinese, I'm finally back building an offline mobile app for HanziCraft, a deep dive Chinese character dictionary I built way back then.

Heya /r/ChineseLanguage,

it's been a while. I used to be deep into learning Chinese between 2008-2013, but I took a break when I changed careers (full-time developer).

I used to blog as Confused Laowai and built a Chinese character dictionary called HanziCraft during that time. I updated the site sporadically between 2014 till now, yet it's still been quite active with a few thousand users every year still searching away.

One goal was to hopefully one day make this into a sustainable side-project but also keep providing value for learners everywhere. So I decided to teach myself mobile development the past few months and soon launch a (paid) offline version of HanziCraft for iOS & Android.

I'm hoping the app can bring in enough so that I can work on HanziCraft full-time and continue helping demystify Chinese characters. I love them so much and I find that there's still lots more info & tools I can build that make learning them easier (and less of a slog!)

For example, this blog post I wrote back in 2012, details a lot of what's happening behind the scenes with Chinese characters. I feel like I'm only scratching the surface of what can be done with them.
