Hi! I'm wondering how many people have been in the same/similar position to me.
I passed HSK 4 last year and I've been casually studying for HSK 5 whilst I finish my final year at university (not studying any language as a degree). I've reached a point where I can watch TV, listen to/have conversations, read books and news articles etc. with a touch of effort but nothing strenuous.
However, my pronunciation is awful.
It's remarked to me relatively frequently now, I've been told that I can be "understood with context" but we all know that's kindness. I've been able to chat with many people fluently (""fluently"") and rapidly about most things but it's definitely an issue. You can sometimes see the buffering sign spin in their head whilst they figure out what I've said sometimes.
I jokingly describe myself as tone deaf but swear on my life, I sometimes genuinely can't hear tones or differentiate them. I've struggled with it from day one, but thought I'd get better at it. Hubris...
Has anyone else ever had to backtrack and fix the mess they made for themselves?
I'm considering learning zhuyin purely for how it's broken up in a more logical manner than pinyin sometimes (and 'cause I wanna go Taiwan la).
