Is it possible to learn Mandarin without learning the Characters?

I'd like to take up a new language as a hobby and I chose Mandarin because I have a lot of Chinese classmates I can practice with. It's also used a lot in my part time work since I have Chinese bosses but already without even getting started, I'm getting scared and overwhelmed of the many Chinese characters and reading the sidebar on where to begin, I'm even doubting myself if I can actually learn Mandarin or not.

One of my Chinese friends told me that I could actually learn Mandarin while skipping the Characters because there are still a lot of native speakers who haven't even memorized or still don't know what each character means and that it isn't important to study or memorize those.

Also, any tips on doubtful learners like me? Sources for online learning, apps to download etc. Read a few past posts of beginners here on this sub and I'm beginning to wonder if they ever did end up learning Mandarin by themselves.
