Curious Question: Any beginner here last year or the past 2 years who's had huge progress

Did anyone here who was a beginner when they posted on this sub actually learn Mandarin or any Chinese language without any formal teachings, just by self-studying?

I guess what I'm looking for is motivation that I can do it too. I'm a non native speaker of both English and Chinese and while I'm more interested to self-learn Japanese or Korean, a friend convinced me to take up Mandarin instead because I can practice with her, a native speaker But Mandarin looks so scary to me and the thought of those never ending characters, how does one even learn all those?
