年终 and 年中 use in spoken language?

i was listening to someone talking to me about the end of year/finals examinations (年终的考试） but i misunderstood it as mid year exams (年中）because they both sound the same? So i was wondering in for natives in their spoken language do they have this issue too? It doesn't have to mean for exams, just anything referring to those time periods ...

Or what is an alternative way to describing these two scenarios?
