What is the “true” Mandarin accent?

Hi everyone,

So this question has been bugging me for a while. I am still pretty beginner in Chinese as I have only been studying for 2 years and only online. I’ve been to Taiwan, Shanghai, Lanzhou and Shenzhen and noticed the slight difference in accents in each place (pretty big difference in Lanzhou which I assume is due to the geographical distance from the other places). My question is, which accent is technically the “correct” accent for professional/public speaking. I realize that there is technically no “correct” accent as language is an art and the rules vary over time/place but I wouldn’t expect to hear a national news anchor speaking with a heavy southern US or Scottish accent so there must be a Mandarin accent that is considered more proper like British English or California or New York English. I’ve heard that the Mandarin spoken in the north of China is that but all the 儿’s to makes it sound like a pirate heathen is speaking...I thought it sounded much nicer in Shenzhen and Taiwan. I’m asking because I’ve been ignoring all the 儿’s when I study and I’m wondering if I should actually be learning to talk that way. Thanks for any advice
