Since I like video games, I was looking for a way to combine them with my Chinese studies. While there are some really good single-player options out there (Starcraft 2, Half Life 2) that have full mandarin text and audio, I always found it a pity that I don't get to interact with actual people the way you do in MMORPGs.
I then stumbled upon a Chinese MMORPG called Moonlight blade (天涯明月刀). It's a high-quality, free-to-play MMO in a WuXia setting. The original version is made by Tencent, and is in Simplified Chinese. I, however, have only been playing the Taiwanese version (since I learn Traditional Chinese), so I can only pass on my experience for the Taiwanese version of the game (link to their website).
To be able to play the game, you do not need to give a phone number. You do, unfortunately, need a VPN with a server based in Taiwan (assuming you do not actually live there). While the game itself is free to play, a good VPN will cost you a couple of dollars a month.
Naturally, since the game server is also based in Taiwan, you will experience input lag. In my case, my skills activate about 300ms after I activate them. Thankfully, all ground-based movement is instant (jumping also has input lag). Needless to say, I play this game for the Mandarin immersion, not to become a PvP God.
Anyway, just thought I'd share this for those who are looking for this kind of way to practice their Mandarin.
