Is it mandatory to write handwritten Chinese?

So, I've been learning Chinese for a while and I find it extremely useless and time-consuming to learn to write Chinese - where I only use digitally. I constantly surround myself with hanzi online (and use flashcards), but will this be enough for me to instantly recognise characters?

Is it really necessary to learn stroke ordered, handwritten Chinese ? Does it only help with memorisation? It'll be so much less stressful knowing that I don't need to practice writing Chinese! Also - do people only practice handwriting for HSK tests solely?

Thanks!
