For those who succeeded to get conversational at Chinese: what did it take?

Hi!

I have started learning Mandarin several times. First time back in university for 2 semesters. Then started with various courses. When I say started it's stopping after *1 week*. Now I realize that's not a lot of time ;)

As a motivation I plan a holiday to China next year. It's not my goal to be perfectly conversational by then. It's more like the holiday should be a motivation for me to study small chucks daily, and don't stop until at least that holiday arrives. My hope is that by then I am so accustomed to learning it that I will continue.

Now I'm considering learning with Michel Thomas method to get a basic overview of the language. Then Pimsleur + something else. Maybe also Glossika at some point but in the beginning this might be too hard. Regular Pimsleur is just 30 minutes a day which is doable and will keep me on track. But I suppose I need something more to understand grammer also on an intellectual level, so I might should follow another course.

My main goal is to be able to talk to people, so all the methods mentioned above are mostly audio. But of course maybe learning some Hanzi would be better. I hope you guys can give me some tips or motivation.

Thanks!
