Learning Cantonese from Mandarin?

Hey guys,

So I’ve taken Mandarin for 5 years now (currently in my 6th year) and I think I’ve grasped the basic pretty well. However, I really want to start learning Canto now.

How easy is it to transition from Mando to Canto? How transferrable is the grammar and the vocabulary? From the basics, it seems quite different (you mou instead of 有没有 or hai mhm hai instead of 是吗). Also how to “equate” Mandarin tones into Cantonese?

I know Canto has up to 9 tones but Mandarin only has 5, including the neutral tone. The Canto tones I’ve heard so far seem pretty random and my native speaking friends said they never learned the tones and just learned how to say it.
