is 烹调 common?

I'm Chinese and I'm trying out a couple of resources to learn how to read and write. They gave me the definition of "cooking" as 烹调 (peng tiao) which was completely unfamiliar to me. When I talk with my parents we say 煮 (zhu) or 做饭 (zuo fan) for cooking. I don't think I've ever heard anyone I know say 烹调 either tbh. Maybe it's a difference in vocab because of the region we're from, but do most places say "烹调“?
