How to make the best of reading apps like Du Chinese and Charisma Bao

I've decided I need to be reading a hell of a lot more to get my read comprehension up and faster.

How do you guys use these apps for the most benefit?

What I've been testing is this:

Listen to the audio, no looking. Listen to the audio again while following the text. Check any words or sentence structures I'm not familiar with.

This is good practise, but I'm not convinced I'll learn new words this way unless I see them in every article. I kinda wish they were longer!
