Problems with Direction Complements and Other Such Words

I've recently run into a wall when it comes to directional complements (上来、下来、起来、上去、下去 etc). When should you use them? When do you put 了 after them?

Another thing is that I have hard time grasping things like "stand straight/crookedly" or "is straight/crooked" or "is wrapped around" or "throughout (an area)" or "interspersed (with)" and direction/orientation things like that in general. How do you say those in Chinese?
