How to improve further as an overseas Chinese?

I am a New Zealand born Chinese in my early 20s, never studied in China, the only classes I’ve taken is the textbook aimed to teach Chinese to overseas. I’ve finished the 12 books a couple years ago. I also know about 1250 of the 1300 in the HSK 5 Vocabulary list that you can find online (haven’t tried HSK 6 vocab).

Everyday Conversation is definitely not a problem, social media (wechat, Weibo) I can under stand most of it usually, but that’s about it. Anything harder like novels, newspapers or complex tv shows I find it hard to follow. Idioms, proverbs all of that stuff I struggle with!

I live in NZ, the only exposure to Chinese is parents plus a handful of at native Chinese friends. I wish I could study more in China but currently that’s not feasible

How should I improve my Chinese given my situation ??

Anyone else here also a Overseas born Chinese that is in a similar boat as me??
