Traditional vs simplified, erhua vs no erhua... Why we should develop a multi-cultural view to learning Chinese

In our Chinese-learning YouTube channel, we are seeing more and more comments that either promote traditional (or standard) over simplified characters or promote one particular way of speaking versus another (e.g. with erhua or without erhua).

In my opinion, we should try and adopt a multi-cultural view and get ourselves acquainted with different ways of saying things, or writing things.

Take the simplified-versus-traditional debate as an example. It's a topic seeped in political debate which I simply do not want to involve myself in. If I were a student learning Chinese, I would simply ask myself, "Where do I want to go?" If I want to go to Taiwan or Hong Kong, I'll learn traditional (standard). But if I want to go to China, I'll learn simplified, plain and simple.

And of course, if students eventually get into classical Chinese, they'll want to learn traditional characters as well.

And even if students study in Taiwan, it wouldn't hurt to at least learn how to read simplified.

Why limit our vision to only one viewpoint? Why align ourselves with one camp or another? Isn't it better to be a bit more balanced and eclectic? Instead of get all worked up about simplified vs traditional, erhua vs not erhua, why not read a Wikipedia article on the history of Chinese writing, which is far more productive?

Anyways... just my little 3:15AM rant.
