Awhile ago I saw a research article posted here that discussed much significant a movement pitches tended to undergo depending on the tones around them/their place in a sentence. Would anyone happen to know the paper referring to off the top of their heads?
For example, i could be completely wrong, but it seems like if there are two consecutive fourth tones in a given word, the second one is less significant. It might just be the audio I have for this particular sentence, but recently in Anki a sentence popped up where this really stood out to me.
這是一次事故。
The 故 does descend, but it's very slight. It almost seems like it picks off the descent where 事 ended and just goes down a little further.
Is this a thing, or is it just what this particular speaker does in this particular situation?
If it is a thing, are there other such situations where tones change a bit / get pronounced less strongly so that comes out easier?
