Taiwanese vs. Chinese Accents in Mandarin

My dad's coworker says that a lot of Chinese people try to imitate the Taiwanese accent because it sounds "cuter" or "more mellow." He is Taiwanese by the way so there might be a slight bias there, lol. Is this true? Can anyone describe the differences more in depth? Is it like how British English tends to sound more sophisticated than American English (to me at least, I'm American)?
