My dictionary says that 俱樂部 was a loan word from the English 'club', but compared to other loan words like 咖啡 it doesn't really sound much like its English equivalent (at least the mandarin pronunciation doesn't). My Japanese dictionary says 俱楽部 is pronounced 'kurabu', which sounds much closer to 'club' but that this is a unique/non-standard pronunciation of those kanji. Any idea about how this word entered either language?
