Hi everyone! I just moved to Shanghai a week ago and I’m finding it hard to understand anything people are saying to me in Mandarin. Some background, I studied Chinese for a year at university back in 2010 and then picked it up again around last summer as a hobby. I am also (pretty) fluent in Japanese, so I reading is easier for me than it would be for someone else around this level, since I can understand the meaning of a lot of things.
Right now, my reading and writing is around HSK3 level. Probably my listening too, but only when it comes to the formulaic conversations in exams. I find that I can’t understand anything people are saying to me in stores and such. It’s just way too fast and likely full of vocab I don’t know yet. I know improving my vocabulary will help with the second point, but what do you recommend I do to quickly improve my listening? I feel like I’ve started shying away from talking to anyone in Mandarin now because I know I won’t understand their response.
