How Do I Write in Mandarin?

Greetings

I'd like to learn Mandarin, but when it come to writing I heard every word in Mandarin has a character. Is this real. If so do I have to learn as much characters as possible to master reading and writing

Finally please give me an advice in learning Mandarin.
