How should I learn Chinese over the summer?

Hi guys,

I'm currently taking Chinese in University (I am required to take three years of it), and I want to continue to learn over this summer because firstly, I don't want to forget anything, as I did over winter break. Also, my Chinese is currently not as good as my classmates and I want to perfect my skills so when I go back in the fall I am caught up/better than the average person (lol). What's the best way to learn Chinese? I will be in Boston for the summer, so if you know of any good resources it will be a lot of help.

I don't know if it is worthwhile self-studying since my main issue is conversation, so any tips will be greatly appreciated!

Mandarin speakers, how do these read for you?

Hello! Can I ask for a little help from the Chinese speakers (and learners) of this community? We're having our game's story translated into Mandarin and would like to confirm if the translation sounds good! A native speaker translated it and I'd like to see if he was able to get more or less some nuances and the not-so-sure parts. Parts that include references to Japanese words/culture/names, or maybe English idioms and such. I'm not expecting 100% accuracy, but something that sounds decent or good from a local speaker's perspective.

We made it so that users can immediately cycle or switch between different fan translations available. For learners of the language, is this something you'll find practical or helpful?

I speak Cantonese (non-native) and I'm literate in Standard Written Chinese, but I don't know any Mandarin. I would like to begin learning it, but I can't read simplified characters well. Last night I dreamed I was sharing tea with 秦始皇帝 (Qin ruler who was largely responsible for a unified China and Chinese language).

Now, like many I am a struggling student of modern Chinese, and so as I was sipping away in the presence of the great emperor, I boldly faced him and said:

" 陛下 (your majesty), seeing as how you're standardizing the axle lengths and currency throughout your mighty kingdom, I really think you need to do something about these tones. Really now. For example, why don't you declare that from henceforth all verbs shall be rising tones (2), nouns are falling (4), adjectives are high (1), proper nouns are (3) and everything else whatever (5) is? Or make the tones dependent on the radicals in the hanzi. Or something, anything according to some sort of rules. It would make life soooooo much easier and no struggling student would ever forget them."

The execution was swift and merciful, but all the same I felt better having spoke my honest mind.

Memrise Mandarin Course with both pinyin and translation?

I've gotten pretty rusty with Mandarin and my goal is to get my vocabulary back up to snuff by using a flashcard app working on the most frequently used words. I don't need to work on grammar or pronunciation, and probably still remember lost of characters and words so would be great if have levels.

I've spent some time looking through the Mandarin courses on Memrise because I like the spaced repetition, but it seems every course has separate cards for pinyin and English translation. Does anyone know of a course where it has a word in Chinese characters, with opposing value being both the English translation and the pinyin for the characters?

Optimal use of practice time with native speaker?

Hi. I’m currently learning mandarin. I’ve been attending a beginners class for 2 hours once a week. I’ve been learning for around 10 weeks. In class, we focus on speaking, structured around the chapters of a book called “Discover China.”

I have 2 hours a week that I can spend with a native speaker. The person is a patient native, but not a teacher. We can spend the time however I/we want. Anybody with experience, what do you think would be the best use of that time? Just revise what I started learning that week?

Anki decks with native audio and traditional characters?

Hey, I began using the NPCR Workbook a few weeks ago.

I also started to set up my own Anki Decks but found the missing pronounciation a major obstacle for thinking that I'm actually learning anything, since pronounciation seems to me among the most difficult but important things.

I found one Anki Deck for the NPCR but it has only Simplified Chinese characters. Furthermore it has only characters and no Pinyin, which is not exactly what I wanted, although it helps in learning the characters. However, I'm more interested in traditional characters.

I also found the "Mastering Chinese" decks that were praised on reddit - but they are way too difficult for me.

I plan on using them in the long run, but right now it seems to me like these are all arbitrary sentences, and almost no vocabulary I'm familiar with.

Any suggestions? As the headline says, it should be traditional, with native audio and for beginners.

I'm also using memrise but since I have no smartphone I can't access apps.

Speechling also seems to be quite useful but again, it's way above my head right now.

How I used spaced repitition to master 國語

I am in medical school and made a youtube channel on how to use Anki (because it's amazing for med school, but not the most user-friendly). The channel is currently most helpful for medical students, but I would like to make some videos on how to use it for learning Chinese (I actually used a spaced repetition method "the tunnel method" to learn Chinese).

Best app for quick still OCR translation?

I often use Chinese apps on my iPhone and need text (from screenshots) translated as quick as possible. I find opening Pleco then side menu > Still OCR > Photo Library > Capture > Image selection> word-by-word translation to be too long of a process. Wechat's new translate feature is actually much more convenient: 3D Touch Wechat app > scan > translate > select image

Is there any app that focuses solely on still OCR translation? Hell, if there's a jailbreak that runs something like 'google translate this page' to your iphone screen I would pay a ridics amount of money for it (and in the process never actually learn any Chinese xD)

Please tell me if these sentence translations are grammatically correct, trying to be concise but not sound like Tarzan!

I'm trying to translate with the least words possible while still being clear/following sensical grammar rules. Like for instance, I don't want the equivalent impression as we would have in English if we heard "Draw circle". That doesn't follow the correct pattern of common nouns requiring articles. So whatever's necessary in Chinese, please tell me if these all abide by that..

"画圆" (Huà yuán) for "draw a circle"

"画线" (Huà xiàn) for "draw a line"

在屏幕上画圆 (Zài píngmù shàng huà yuán) for "draw a circle on the screen"

Need to Reboot My Learning Progress

It’s a tale as old as time, I’m 1.5 years into learning with Wang Peng and friends, but my college class doesn’t put much emphasis into actually speaking Chinese. I’m hoping to go to China this summer and my listening, speaking, and tone recognition skills are severely lacking. I know all of HSK 2 vocabulary and a fair portion of 3, but I only remember the tones for maybe like 50 words. I have tried Anki, but I have found I just don’t really enjoy it as I find it to be robotic and a chore. I’d like to improve my speaking and listening to match my reading level, but I can’t seem to find a good routine to achieve such. Any suggestions are welcome thanks in advance.

Learning Chinese for my Students

Hello! I am a music teacher, and I've just started a job at a school where many of my students don't speak English at home. I know that transitioning to an English only school in a somewhat rural area where there aren't many translators is really scary and hard, a lot of them have taken to pretending they don't know any English and only speaking to their friends that also speak their language. I want to do something to make them feel more welcomed, accepted, and understood. I know I cant become fluent overnight, but I've begun looking at some online learning sources and I'm trying. However, so far all I'm really learning is numbers, greetings, and such. I was hoping this community might be able to help me with some words or phrases a music teacher might need! It would also be cool if you all had song suggestions I could teach my classes! I really appreciate any and all help!

Meaning of a certain character (seal or bone script)

I am considering getting a chinese character as a tattoo. Allow me to explain: [Hexagram 50](http://inthefamilyway.org/iching/hexagrams/h50/) from the I Ching has a special meaning for me personally. On the linked page, you can see an old character displayed with it. This character seems to be from seal script or from bone script, i am not sure.

I would like to use this character for a tattoo. Could you be so kind and confirm that this character really means 'vessel' | 'cauldron' | '[Ding](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ding_(vessel))) (ritual bronze, for my understanding is that this is the object the concept refers to)' or, alternatively, tell me i am wrong or this is doubtful? Naturally, i am very hesitant to only verify this myself via random webpages.

I would not use it if the meaning is not sure or if this would be greatly disrespectful for Chinese, so if this is the case, please do not hesitate to tell me.
