Good ways to learn conversational Chinese?

Hey, I've been taking for Chinese for a little bit now and I'm now at the advanced one class. The problem is we are learning a lot of literary and formal terms when I still can't speak to normal people on the street. Of course in class, I completely understand the teacher and can speak fine, but outside of class I end up misunderstanding people a lot or just don't know how to respond. Basically at this point if I want to be able to actually speak with people, it's up to me. How can I increase my casual conversational Chinese the best? I try to watch TV shows, but I'm not sure how much it's helping. Can I get some strategies to do, or at least pointers on how I should be watching these TV shows to get the best effect (eg with or with out subtitles, what language subtitles, should I pause when I don't understand, reality shows vs scripted, etc).

Any books that you guys think give a more comprehensive set of vocabulary than the first four integrated Chinese books would be good too.
