I’ve recently taken up quite an interest in learning Chinese, but am understandably a wee bit intimidated at the prospect of self learning. I’ve got absolutely next to no experience in Chinese, and would love to hear any text and resource recommendations, general keys to success, and things you wish you would’ve known when you first started learning Chinese. For what it’s worth I’m actually currently studying abroad in Japan, at around an intermediate level of Japanese, and am planning on enrolling into Chinese courses as well as trying to maintain and improve my Japanese when I return from my semester abroad. I’d imagine in terms of traditional Chinese characters I may be able to learn a bit faster than someone with absolutely no experience due to having a general solid understanding of character radicals, and some of the characters being identical to Japanese, but that’s about it. Overall thoughts on how to build a solid foundation myself until I get myself enrolled in Chinese courses in around August?
