A question about dialect:

So, I’m learning Chinese because my in-laws are from and currently live in Taiwan. Most of my partner’s extended family live there and we travel there frequently. I want to better participate! However, when I practice with learning podcasts and apps, sometimes the speakers are using a dialect my partner does not recognize- is there a huge difference between Taiwanese Mandarin and Mainland Mandarin? If so, are there resources I can use to help learn what I need to learn for this context?
