Traditional vs Simplified

Can I ask for some feedback on learning traditional vs simplified Chinese? I’m currently learning the traditional characters for a couple of reasons: I like to learn about the history of the language, I’m not planning to go and visit mainland China for at least 5 years and I feel like learning the traditional characters is in some ways ‘easier’ for me because the building blocks are often more clear to understand. I also thought that if I’m eventually mastering those characters, switching to simplified characters might be easier than the other way around. There is something I’m a little worried about though - I’ve always thought traditional Chinese would at least help me get by in for example Taiwan, but I understand now that they have different pronunciations? Is there any place where traditional Chinese (with pinyin) would be of use - like Hong-Kong, or do they also have different accents? What do you think - does traditional Chinese give you a good foundation of the language anyway or would you recommend always going for simplified?
