Starting Chinese

Hi guys. So the chinese course started on my college last week, we're having 2 classes per week with a chinese teacher from the Confucius institue teaching us. To be honest i was surprised when i saw they introduced the course (we're a small country) and wasn't 100% sure whether to start or not. They said we'll have an oportunity to travel to China which made me sure to join.
Anyway, i wanted to ask you what should i do to maximize my learning process at home without being overwhelmed. I'm doing the duolingo lessons atm but i have a hard time with the characters. We already went trough some basic stuff like saying ''Hi'' and so on.
