Complete beginner at Chinese. What books and other tips would you recommend?

So having now reached my mid 20s, I have decided to finally do something I’ve always wanted to do, and learn some Chinese. I want to be able to get to the level where I can have basic conversation with people, and have basic navigation skills when I am there.

In terms of time commitment, I spend around 2 hours sitting on the train for my commute into London for work. So I could potentially spend some of this time studying, even if it’s just for 30 minutes per day.

The problem is the language is very daunting and I’m not sure where to start! I’ve got the Duolingo course downloaded, but I was wondering if there were any books that are perfect/generally recommended for beginners? Also podcasts would be great too!

Anyway thanks in advance for any advice! (P.S. sorry if there is already a thread for posts like this, I did have a look but couldn’t find anything so thought I’d make a post)
