Because learning Chinese is fun and so is sleep, why not throw out a whole bunch of words and phrases about sleep (or the lack thereof), being tired, etc.
Edit: sorry, there ended up being a lot less structure to this than I had intended. I tried to make it a good mix of clearly defining things while also giving colloquial usage (in other words, this is how you should talk to people on WeChat 😊). Hopefully people can follow and please add anything else you can think of or ask any questions.
- 你睡吧 - You (should) sleep.
nǐ shuì ba - 我要睡觉了 - I’m going to sleep.
wǒ yào shuì jiào le - 我该睡了 - I should sleep.
wǒ gāi shuì liǎo - 已经不早了,晚安 - It's already not early (it’s late), goodnight
yǐ jīng bù zǎo le , wǎn ān - 安了 - short form of goodnight that you’d probably use online after the other person already said 晚安
ān le - 你回去(睡个觉/睡个好觉)吧 – You (should) go home and get a good sleep.
nǐ huí qù ( shuì gè jué / shuì gè hǎo jué ) ba - 做个好梦 - have a good dream (not creepy or awkward. basically just means sleep well)
zuò gè hǎo mèng - 我(困了/瞌睡了) – I’m sleepy. Usage of one or the other is regional/personal preference. 困了 is most universally common in Mainland China.
wǒ ( kùn le / kē shuì le ) - 你累不累?怎么还不休息? - Aren’t you tired? Why aren’t you resting yet? I threw 累 in there because it does indeed mean tired, and SOMEtimes can be related to sleep, but not necessarily. 困了and瞌睡 are 100% sleep-related.累is not. 休息 is kind of a similar situation. It means rest. It might also mean sleep, and probably actually 90% of the time it does, but also not necessarily.
nǐ lèi bú lèi ? zěn me hái bù xiū xī ? - 昨晚睡眠不足 – I didn’t get good sleep last night.睡眠 is actual sleep. Good sleep.
zuó wǎn shuì mián bù zú - message at 3 AM: 你也失眠了吗? - You can’t sleep either?
nǐ yě shī mián le ma ? - 我作业没写完,估计今晚要(熬夜/通宵)了 – I haven’t finished my homework, I’m guessing I’ll have to stay up all night tonight.
wǒ zuò yè méi xiě wán , gū jì jīn wǎn yào ( āo yè / tōng xiāo ) le - 昨晚没睡好,所以今天一天没精神 – didn’t sleep well last night, so I’ve had no energy all day today
zuó wǎn méi shuì hǎo , suǒ yǐ jīn tiān yī tiān méi jīng shén - 她是夜猫子 – she’s a night cat (same as night owl)
tā shì yè māo zǐ - 你睡着了没? - Have you fallen asleep yet?
nǐ shuì zháo le méi ? - 哎,你怎么还睡不着?在想什么? - Dang, how have you still not fallen asleep? What are you thinking about?
āi , nǐ zěn me hái shuì bù zháo ? zài xiǎng shén me ? - 睡懒觉 – to sleep in
shuì lǎn jiào - 我打算明天早上睡个懒觉 – I plan on sleeping in tomorrow morning
wǒ dǎ suàn míng tiān zǎo shàng shuì gè lǎn jiào - 午休,午睡,睡个午觉 – All ways to indicate the traditional Chinese post-lunch nap and rest.
wǔ xiū , wǔ shuì , shuì gè wǔ jiào - 打盹/打个盹/眯/眯一会儿 – Other ways to say take a nap. Not entirely common but totally fair game.打盹is more straight up ‘to nap,’ whereas 我要眯一会二 is like ‘I’m just going to shut my eyes for a minute here.’ (PS you can just type 眯一会and skip the 儿)
dǎ dǔn / dǎ gè dǔn / mī / mī yī huì r - 你昨晚休息好了吗?嗯,我(睡得很香)/(睡得很沉) – Did you get some good rest last night? Yep, I (had a refreshing sleep)/(slept wonderfully/like a log)
nǐ zuó wǎn xiū xī hǎo le má ? ēn, wǒ ( shuì dé hěn xiāng ) / ( shuì dé hěn chén )
